A unique collection in the world

The Musée des Plans-Reliefs preserves and presents a collection unique in the world: historical models of fortified cities and surrounding countryside, made between the reigns of Louis XIV and Napoleon III, on the same scale (1:600) and with the same techniques & materials (sand, silk, paper, wood…)
The 3D models were mainly used as military planning tools and were also an attribute of the prestige of the heads of state. Today, they are an irreplaceable source of information on the sites they represent and a valuable teaching tool. Through these models, masterpieces of miniaturization, the visitor can discover the aspect of Mont-Saint-Michel or of the Atlantic coast’s islands at the time of Louis XIV, but also cities like Bayonne (model of 56 m²!), Perpignan, Saint-Tropez, Toulon…
