Contemporary art for all

As the first and only contemporary art museum opened in the suburbs, the MAC/VAL - Val-de Marne Contemporary Art Museum in Vitry-sur-Seine has one main goal: making art accessible. One way they do this is through an adapted entrance fee system, and by offering different kinds of visits, including for families. Based on a collection built by the department since the 1980s, the MAC/VAL opened its doors in 2005. Today it presents 2,000 works from 330 artists on the theme of contemporary French art, from the 1950s to the present.

With 4,000 m² of permanent and temporary exhibitions for visitors in an environment that is understated, calm, and luminous, the building is surrounded by a 10,000 m² garden. In addition to hosting artists-in-residence, the MAC/VAL also brings contemporary art closer to the general public, thanks to its programming, representations, and meetings, as well as workshops, including Contemporary Art Laboratories for adults alongside invited artists, and Contemporary Art Production workshops for children.
