Barbizon’s reputation was forged in the 19th century when artists from Paris such as Corot, Rousseau, Daubigny and Millet, set up their easels on the edge of the forest in order to “surprise nature in its home”. Spend some time at the Auberge Ganne, the bohemian inn where the young painters used to gather and now the Musée Départemental de l’Ecole de Barbizon (Museum of the Barbizon School of Painting), which presents the period of these artists and some of their original canvases. Visit the home and studio of the painter, Jean-François Millet, who is famous for his painting, ‘L’Angélus’. |

| Stroll along the main street of the village with its succession of artist’s workshops, art galleries and craft shops. To round off your day, why not follow in the footsteps of the painters along a marked footpath in the forest? |
